Technical Ability & Time Keeping
The drummer’s primary responsibility is to keep time. If a student’s timekeeping is weak, it may be due to technical shortcomings. By examining the mechanics of HOW something is played rather than WHAT is played, students can develop a deeper comprehension of the skills necessary to execute their desired performance, leading to a more consistent groove. My objective is to assist students in cutting through the clutter and providing them with effective, hands-on exercises that enhance their musicality, technical proficiency, and aptitude to adapt to various musical situations.
Drum Education in the Social Media Era
Many contemporary drummers seem to approach their craft as if it were a paint-by-numbers exercise, with little consideration given to the musical requirements. This trend can be largely attributed to the prevalence of social media, which floods aspiring drummers with a deluge of educational resources devoid of musical context. Consequently, drummers end up with a destination but no sense of direction, making it difficult to progress. The sheer amount of drum education content available, both online and in print, can be overwhelming and unhelpful in the real world. It’s frustrating to observe aspiring drummers ploughing through conceptual books, online videos and tutorials, trying to grasp concepts that they struggle to find application for in the real word.
Real-World Experience
Due to the amount of resources available, there is a generation of drummers who posses large vocabularies but lack an understanding of their practical application. It is only through playing with other musicians in real-world scenarios that drummers can truly grasp their role on the instrument. While practicing alone is crucial for honing one’s skills, performing live or recording sessions compels musicians to be self-reliant. This hands-on experience allows students to determine whether their studies translate into real-world applications.
